2016 Herbert Warren Wind Book Award

Every year since 1997, the US Golf Association has singled out a book that they believe exemplifies the knowledgeable and insightful writing that Herbert Warren Wind brought to the sport of golf. The Stark Center is very pleased to congratulate the winner of the 2016 Herbert Warren Wind Book Award, Kevin Robbins, author of Harvey Penick: The Life and Wisdom of the Man Who Wrote the Book on Golf. Although Robbins is currently a lecturer for the University of Texas School of Journalism, he earned his golf-writing chops covering the sport for over 22 years in local and regional daily newspapers. Like many of us, Robbins was captivated by Mr. Penick’s observant, astute, yet seemingly simple approach to instruction. Unlike us, Robbins decided to research the life of this quiet but influential teacher. The result not only sheds light on Mr. Penick’s life but also describes in rich detail the surprisingly vibrant Austin golf scene, one that produced luminaries like Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, Betsy Rawls, and others. The Stark Center, home of the Tinsley and Harvey Penick Archive Collection (which includes the original “little red book”), is proud to have assisted Mr. Robbins with his research.
